Conservatives make a fetish out of the past. Liberals do not. The liberal Pope did not, in my opinion, use the word with the connotations you supply.

I now believe the Pope is under pressure from right wingers (especially Poles and Hungarians) in his church so he throws them a bone with recognizing "invasion" but being a liberal he puts a shine on it.
