He referred to the influx of Muslims into Europe as an "Arab Invasion" and said that it is a good thing.

I am surprise that the Pope would use such provocative language even if he later qualified its meaning.

After much thought, I believe the better word would be sly. The Pope is sly.

The use of the loaded term "invasion" aligns with how a traditional constituency of
his church would regard the influx, but then he seeks cover with extenuation.

OK. Don't see this as all that sly. Absent evidence to the contrary, I take him at face value. He's a liberal who indeed sees greater diversity as intrinsically good. That's basically what he's saying.

He uses the word 'invasion' because it's NOT loaded for him, in this context. He does not see the influx as doing any great harm. Certainly nothing to justify the intentional and grievous harm blocking them would do. That, and the hate, are the moral hazard here. That's where the sin is.

He's the fucking Pope for Christ's sake. He was selected to be the Church's spokesman by a pack of cardinals. He knew how "invasion" would come across.
