I think the legal standard is a reasonable man in the same position. In this instance, that distills down to a reasonable policeman (which is all that can be expected of the cop in question), as should be the case. As in all cases, we have to rely on the judgment of others (i.e., the jury).

I can't imagine using any other standard other than the "reasonable man" standard in cases such as this. What else can they do?

What I was supposing. Tell the jury not to apply their judgement of what a reasonable man would do, but to take give weight to testimony from police experts on what is reasonable for police.
