Intermural sports excepted, public funding of competitive sports is wasteful spending.

If they built it, who would go? And who really pays for it? Having something as an anchor for a general comnercial revival seems a good idea if it can succeed and remains free of corruption and cronyism.
There's been talk for years of getting something like this going in B'ham but the proposed dome stadium concept hasn't generated sufficient enthusiasm or support. Would i go? Probanly not as a regular if at all, can't speak for others but the ice hockey and football teams didn't make it here.
Like many municipalities of a certain size they've adopted successful neighbor teams like from Atlanta to follow without the domestic financial risk.

That's one example.

As a Florida DOT employee the one I am most familiar with is when a politically connected developer demands that we spend $50 million in public money to build an interchange so that he can develop the property he bought for cheap because it didn't have access to the interstate. And of course the word would come down from up high to us worker bees to "make it happen".

Then we'd have to figure out a way to prepare an Interchange Justification Report to demonstrate that said interchange was needed to benefit the general motoring public and not for the real reason which was for one specific developer to make a killing. What was particularly galling is that then we would have to purchase the right of way from that developer and pay him for it's "highest and best use" so that he could make some more big bucks from that. I mean this shit went on the whole time I was there but it got even worse when Jeb Bush came in in 1998. I understand it's gotten even worse under Rick Scott. Glad I am retired.

If they are doing so well then they ought to be able to build their own goddamned new stadium with their own goddamn money.

Reminds me of season 2 of Boardwalk Empire and highway development, a total crony candy dish.

At's all about profitability - obscene profits. I was pissed when the Cardinals built a new stadium that actually reduced the number of seats by 10K, but tripled the number of luxury suites. The yearly rental of the suites more than made up for the lost ticket revenue.

D-Ray

Generally the "Public/Private Partnership" scam that I was familiar with was when a developer would come in and say "If you'll build us a 40 million dollar roadway project so that I can put in a big assed development I'll give you some of the what is now worthless Palmetto scrub out there for right of way to build it on."

In Florida those luxury corporate skyboxes are sales tax exempted.

But the working stiffs down in the cheap seats have to pay 7% or more sales tax on them.

What's really galling about that is that a lot of these stadium project get funded by an extra penny of sales tax.
