It is hard for me to understand that somebody can purchase a .45 like a pair of socks. It becomes unbelievable considering this somebody is mentally ill.

Not sure if he was diagnosed with anything at the time of purchase.
But I do agree, the back ground fails in the aspect of preventing the mentally ill from purchasing weapons as it should. The system is broke and needs to be fixed.
What I have issues with is expanding a broken system and pretending that it will make a deference.

The problem is that Mad Uncle Wayne has convinced his followers in governments to see that the ATF does not get the funds needed to do the job. And of course with States Rights it is up to the individual states whether they updatethe database or not.

Even if he had been diagnosed at the time of purchase, it would have made no difference if he bought the weapon in the secondary market. Because the knuckle dragging idiots over in the pro-gun lobby won't let us expand background checks or tighten up the system.
Think we need to keep guns out of the hands of crazy people? Great, so do I. Now get the fuck out of our way.

OK...we have a report, thanks so much to 5 below. What's your fucking point? Of course there's some anti-Obama point. Back in 1977 we found a hunk of metal can trim in our tomato sauce...fucking Obama.
Look...I spent 6 years in the Marine Corps. There were decent guys, marginal guys and assholes in the Marine Corps. Nothing's changed with our now "professional" military. All you have to do is check the numbers on rape, sexual harassment and domestic violence...and how it's all swept under the rug by commanders. There are mass shootings in the general public...there are mass shootings in the military, and every shooter has their sick reason for doing it. That's the end of it.
There's nothing political about it.

Yep, just lookup Jacksonville NC and note the number of women's shelters in the area, the teen pregnancy rate and just how many family/domestic violence councellors there are in town whose population is less than 80,000.
Or ask my wife her first husband was an ex-marine officer.

Firearms are a marginally regulated commodity with an out-of proportion aura of politically volatile baggage in the USA, as illogical as that may sound to someone living in a culturally advanced country. OTOH, what happened in Denmark with Anders Brevik illustrates the hazard vs practical considerations of regulation.
I've been around them my entire life, they are useful tools as vermin control, farm and ranch stock defense, sport and survival hunting, target/pleasure activities, and if needed, personal and household defense weaponry. The mystical aura they have in some small but politically powerful groups here totally escapes me and I refuse to be associated with that.
