ESPN's statement:

“We collectively made the decision with Robert to switch games as the tragic events in Charlottesville were unfolding, simply because of the coincidence of his name. Somewhat more amazing is that ESPN employee Lee is an Asian American that would not trace his family history and origins to anywhere near Charlottesville, Virginia, the Confederacy, the South, etc.

But highlighting ESPN's comments: "...we regret that who calls play by play for a football game has become an issue." My question is: Who made the guy's name and whether he calls that particular football game an "issue"? I sincerely doubt it was anyone on the right. And this issue, I guess, is that this guy being attached to the telecast of this football game is something the lefty's at ESPN fear might trigger a micro-aggression or something? Who the hell thinks like this??

Like I said earlier (and was roundly criticized for, by the way): where does this stop? Once we open the Pandora's Box and surrender to mob rule on this topic, where does it end?

I wonder why you chose not to mention this part of the article, Mike? Looks like it was a mutual decision.

You can wonder all you want. I posted the statement that ESPN released. That statement says: "We collectively made the decision with Robert to switch games...." You may disagree, but I don't think that statement leaves any doubt that Mr. Lee participated in the decision-making process.

You can also quote the "un-named spokesperson's" statement, but I find it irrelevant. By the time that unattributed quote was made, articles were already appearing that questioned ESPN's decision-making here. I sincerely doubt Mr Lee originated this discussion with ESPN's management, and that's the salient point.

And still the unanswered question: who in their right mind thinks like this?

Actually, it's your racist Trumpenfuhrer who is the joke. The switch on the assignment change was first reported by Clay Travis, the founder of the Outkick the Coverage site and a host on Fox Sports Radio. The story picked up a lot of steam immediately on conservative outlets and with conservative commentators. It has since by picked up by everyone short of The Onion.

ESPN later issued additional comments, first to Yashar Ali of New York Magazine and then to other outlets: “No biggie until someone leaked it to embarrass us,” said an ESPN PR spokesperson. “They got their way. That’s what happened. No politically correct efforts. No race issues. Just trying to be supportive of a young guy who felt it best to avoid the potential zoo.”
