But the fact is that without Sherman, Lincoln would not have been re-elected and the outcome under a President McClellan would have been much different. And what swung the 1864 election was the fall of Atlanta. Grant didn't get Lincoln re-elected...it was Sherman.
So if there's a Union hero commanding general officer, it's Sherman. And he consciously and actively waged war on civilians. South Carolina got it worse than Georgia, "This is where secession began and by God this is where it shall end."
The first modern general who operated under the theory of "total war."
