Man kills himself, causing much inconvenience

Yesterday afternoon a man shot himself dead by or on the west Capitol steps, just after 1:00 pm.

Tourists and witnesses shared their experiences being stuck inside the U.S. Capitol during a lockdown that followed with 4NBCNews, Washington. http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/299452321.html

The news that the lockdown at the Capitol had been lifted and all was back to normal was the lead in most reporting I can find on the incident.

The man felt strongly enough to publicly end his life in a highly symbolic location, but very little is known of the point he hoped to make. News stories quote the Capitol Police as saying the man had a sign that "said something about 'social justice.'"

Whatever that is.

BTW, the Wall Street Journal report on the incident chooses not to mention the 'social justice,' part, thus quashing even the tiniest iota of the message the man killed himself to deliver.

It strikes me that we have the same sort of reaction here as was the case in the press.

Suicide is an inconsiderate act. Although we must cut this guy some slack for not blowing his brains all over the bathroom, or worse, the kitchen...and leaving the mess for his family to clean up.

I guess we all agree: we have evidence here that as a way to fight for social justice, suicide works poorly.

Always considered it the act of final desperation, and I knew a couple of people who took their own lives. It is simply stating that 'I cannot live in your world'.

I agree in cases of terminal illness or physical/medical problems which have so compromised one's quality of life that ending one's life is reasonable. But typical emotionally driven suicides are commited as much to punish others as to end one's own psychic/emotional pain.

well done

indeed, not all people are cut out to live in this "free" society where we are compelled to be part of a capitalistic system that rewards or penalizes birth and insists we all have an equal opportunity in the face of fact.
