Merkel brought in over a million refugees/immigrants, mainly young men, mainly not vetted, mainly from conflict zones in Muslim lands. This she did in a very short time span and in a time when people with Muslim connections did terrorized public spaces in Europe.
There is some xenophobia, but to characterize the response as xenophobic is short sighted. There is great apprehension in Germany when they look at such places like Brussels and Malmo.
The rightists will exploit the situation and many people will vote for them because they view Merkel as naive and sense that the left is crippled.
The vote could be viewed largely as protest...sending a message.
Increasingly Merkel finds herself isolated in Europe re immigrants/refugees that she has resorted to threats of fines and penalties for EU countries which do not accept her plan of distributing some of the influx.
The German situation is exacerbated by Frau Merkel refusal to announce a cap and by refugees who even when they are given stay in other EU countries leave for Germany.
