Proud to be an American?
There have been several surveys lately on whether political leanings impact your response to "Are you proud to be an American." Of course, Limbaugh/Fox jumped all over one of three that indicated libs are less inclined to say so the conservatives.

To me, the question itself is puzzling. I'm about as proud to be American as I am proud to have brown eyes. Namely, I did nothing to acquire these attributes and neither reflect upon any accomplishments on my part, just the happenstance of my birth. Thoughts?

I'm often ashamed of the actions of our country, towards it's own citizens and towards other countries. To be sure there is some good but it's increasingly hard to find.
The rise of 'imperialism' foisted on the world by the neoconservative movement in this country is particularly dangerous to our long term viability. I often wish they would STFU and go back to their countryclubs and leave the rest of us alone.
Funny I was sitting here listening to this John Entwhistle tune and contemplating this puzzle. yeh, I'm a little weird.

I'm proud of most aspects of being an citizen of the United Sates of American. Ashamed of others due to exploitation and force of muscle across the world.. We can be better and hopefully someday will be.
This article just goes to show just how arrogant we are in this country are, to think only US citizens are Americans. Canadians, Mexicans just to name two are also Americans. Just as European or African labels a geographic area.
Gotta go finish watching the game. Tied now!!

I am glad to be American.....
having seen other parts of the world
I think we may have hit our zenith in the 70s with all the Ford Pintos and Ford-GM financed mortgages thanks to the assembly line for all the 1940- 50s high school drop-outs and higher middle class salaries for the Men in the Gray Flannel suits who ran said manufacturing corporations. Think of Leave It To Beaver's Hugh Downs.
The kids of the drop-outs went off to college and in the 90s got their taste of the 70s boom.
Like the French in the 1800s we tried to export Democracy and our way of life but sort of failed...
but I think we are still the best place on Earth
I mean why are all those kids risking their lives trying to get here?
Things change...we may become a nation of extended families like the Walton's were on that Hollywood lot that looked like West Virginia lol.

I am grateful to be an American but can only take pride in my own meager accomplishments, pride in the accomplishments of others isn't mine to have. Accident of birth is happenstance and nothing one can take as their own doing.

That's logical, but emotionally we are wired to identify with the tribe and be proud of it's successes. Individual reactions may vary....

Like someone else said above, it's an accident of birth. Nothing to be proud of.
Like being born white.

Some folks are born made to wave the flag
Ooh, they're red, white and blue
And when the band plays "Hail to the Chief"
Oh, they point the cannon at you, Lord
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no Senator's son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, no
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, oh
But when the tax men come to the door
Lord, the house look a like a rummage sale, yes
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no millionaire's son, no, no
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, no
Yeah, some folks inherit star spangled eyes
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Oh, they only answer, more, more, more, oh
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no military son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, no, no, no
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate son, no, no

It is fine to say: I am glad to be an American, I am grateful to be an American, like some of you do. So am I. Glad and grateful to be a German.
