Truman had to wrestle with the possility of a million American casualties at at time when they had just an obscene amount of American deaths in Okinawa. Commander in chief has to take care of his nation first. And he did indeed warn Japan.
A Japan that performed many atrocities during the war in Asia. Like the Rape of Nanking.
Sometimes I agree with Allan Bloom about the evils
of moral relativism. I see no hypocracy here at all.

I mean just imagine street to street fighiting on the mainland.

Agreed. Look what they did in Manila and to our guys on Bataan. Burning 3/4 of Tokyo didn't seem to phase them at all.

Jesus as warrior? Well he did throw the money changers out of the temple. He also told his disciples that if people did not want to listen to them to merely shake the dust from their shoes and move on.
Paul in writing to the people of Corinth wrote "...and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing." Hardly warlike IMHO.
In the last thirty one years we have seen intervention in our lives that defies explanation. Was it Divine? As good an explanation as any as far as we are concerned.
Individuals that use religion to attempt to make people follow some crazy idea are anything but religious. What Jesus taught was a plan or method whereby people could attain their own individual potential, and there was no suggestion of stepping on others on the way to that potential.
But then what do I know.

BTW, my intent in this thread was not to cast aspersions upon Christianity. It's meant to show how religion, even Christianity, can be manipulated to serve as a catalyst for mass insanity.
And, I think we're watching it happen again, right before our very eyes.

Gotta say, when you start a thread they are usually good'uns, Dave. Now, where did I leave those pom-poms? Just kiddin', man.

To the original OP I think we are far away from any sort of thing like that happening here.
As for religion...I do not think the faith is what turns men evil, but the hunger for power that uses religion as an ends to achieve hegemony.
