While everyone was watching the dumpster fire

This was happening in Congress -

"Monday was the first anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando that left 49 dead. Saturday will be the second anniversary of the church shooting in Charleston, S.C., where nine were murdered at Bible study.
In between these two somber remembrances, House Republicans will be commemorating the occasion in their own way: They will begin work relaxing restrictions on firearm silencers — thereby making it easier for shooters to shoot without being noticed.
Classy.

To this injury, the legislators add insult with the bill’s name: a provision of the “Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act” called the “Hearing Protection Act” — as if it were subsidizing earplugs. That’s like calling legislation that expands the availability of machine guns the “Carpal Tunnel Protection Act” because it spares would-be shooters the repetitive motion of trigger pulling." Bob if you were expecting this country to do anything halfway intelligent with regards to guns I hope you are not holding your breath - it is the State religion.

Next anybody over 14 will be required to carry a loaded weapon, no training or background checks required.

And here from the state we used to live in and was happy to get out.

Florida law shifts burden of proof in 'stand your ground'
Quote:
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida became the first state with a law that spells out that prosecutors, and not defendants, have the burden of proof in pretrial "stand your ground" hearings when Republican Gov. Rick Scott signed a bill Friday.
Have gun, shoot first and no questions asked. Literally, this is what this law amounts to.

I very much doubt that the citizens in Florida even know or care what these laws are or what the impact will be.

After posting this op-ed yesterday, I woke up to this story.

"A gunman unleashed a barrage of gunfire Wednesday at a park in Alexandria, Va., as Republican members of Congress held a morning baseball practice, wounding five people, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (La.).
President Trump said the suspected gunman — identified by multiple law enforcement officials as James T. Hodgkinson III, 66, from Illinois — was killed in a shootout with police, two of whom were wounded in the gun battle." WP

Prayers offered for all the victims of this shooting and the many others that happen every goddamn day in our country.

Wehre is Florida on open carry? With the law so revised strikes me that folks might want to carry on hip, and practice their quick draws. There's a big need to defend yourself first, after all, before the other guy can defend himself....

Sounds like "too little, too late"?
I'd commented earlier that there were few ways to "fix" this mess. One involved obtaining a pretty good time machine and a do-over. Another a "Designated Survivor" scenario. And another just loading all the DC 'pubs onto a jumbo heavy and sending it into a thunderstorm over the Atlantic ocean.

The cautionary tale told by Will Shakespeare in Julius Caesar tells us that there are no easy solutions to bad leadership without dire unintended consequences. That is what recasting the play is really about.
