House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot in the hip and at least one other aide was also hit in the chest by a gunman with a rifle who opened fire at a baseball practice in Virginia Wednesday morning, Fox News confirmed.

Police tweeted they "believed" the gunman was in custody. Sen. Mike Lee told Fox News, however, the gunman was dead. He said a staffer used a belt as a tourniquet to stop Scalise's bleeding.

Very sad, but this is the inevitable result of letting virtually anyone stroll into a Walmart and walk out with a gun, a policy that Scalise and every Republican on that softball field strongly supports. This is the kind of America they claim to want - one where people can use "Second Amendment solutions" to solve intractable political problems.

In the words of Donald Trump (who Scalise strongly supports) - “Hillary wants to abolish — essentially abolish the Second Amendment. By the way, if she gets to pick, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know.”

Meanwhile, just this week, the GOP is trying to revoke laws prohibiting gun silencers. As a guy who doesn't support Second Amendment solutions, I find this shooting appalling. However, how can those who vocally support Second Amendment solutions be particularly upset when their recommendations are acted upon? Isn't this the America they want?

Police in Alexandria, Virginia, say they are investigating a shooting involving multiple people in northern Virginia.

U.S. Rep. Mike Bishop, R-Rochester, said he was on the baseball field Wednesday.

“As we were standing on the field, there was a loud burst of gunfire from about 40 yards away from us,” he told The Detroit News. “I saw people going down.”

Media reports Wednesday said the unidentified gunman shot and wounded House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-LA.

Bishop confirmed it.

He also said he feared for his life and the lives of everyone else on the field.

“He would have taken down every single one of us because he had several magazines of ammunition ready to reload,” he said. “The only reason we were able to find cover is because we were inside the backstop, the only reason we were able to get out because there were guys here with weapons who fired back.”

A spokesman for Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint Township, said he was at baseball practice with the Democratic team on a field in Washington, D.C., separate from where the shooting took place. Kildee is fine.

This CNN story indicates several people shot in a prolongued gun battle with, as far as is known at this time, a single shooter armed with a semi-automatic rifle. Report says shooter was 'taken down' by fire from members of security detail present, who were themselves wounded. No word yet on shooter's condition.

Sounds like a very dangerous attack.

I failed to mention that the GOP also recently voted on a measure to make it easier for the mentally ill to buy guns. Actions have consequences and making it easier for the mentally ill to buy guns while encouraging them to undertake "Second Amendment solutions" ain't exactly helpful.

So it is as easy for mentally ill as it is for terrorists to buy guns without any scrutiny.

With Washington under complete Republican control, the gun lobby finds itself in an odd position: Without anything to fight against, which is what they usually do, they have to find something to fight for. So what did they come up with? How about making sure that people suffering from mental illnesses can still have access to firearms?

That’s what Republicans did Wednesday. A bill to undo an Obama administration regulation restricting gun access from certain mentally ill people had already passed the House, and Wednesday it passed the Senate.

One can certainly argue that this is utterly ludicrous. But there’s a larger issue at work here about one of America’s most powerful lobbies. Despite the fact that their allies are in power, this is actually not a uniformly good time for them.
