I think he's saying that the pamphlet was useful in riling up the rubes that the rich needed to do the actual fighting.

You know, the uneducated illiterate masses.

I'm pretty sure that many propertied persons in the original 13 were not rich.

Having "Common Sense" read aloud was popular in taverns and inns throughout the colonies.

If King George had just given his colonists an MP or two we'd be writing about something else of equal importance.
