""Major development: Russia adopts nuclear first strike policy""

Wed, 03 Jun 2020 00:00 UTC

https://www.sott.net/article/435623-...-strike-policy

""Russia will be ready to use nuclear weapons in the event of the use of weapons of mass destruction against it or its allies, as well as in the case of non-nuclear aggression against the Russian Federation, which would threaten the existence of the Russian state and the possibility of a retaliatory nuclear strike.""

""In addition, the Russian Federation will be ready to use nuclear weapons if the enemy acts on its critically important state and military facilities, the failure of which will disrupt the response of nuclear forces, and in the case of aggression using conventional weapons, which would threaten the very existence of the Russian state .""

Scary .....

This should be assumed for nuclear powers. The US, as far as I know, has not renounced first use of nuclear weapons. We long feared hordes of Russian tanks invading through Germany would make it necessary.

So will Pootin use nukes against Ukraine if the invasion doesn't go his way. Will states assisting Ukraine fight off Russia come under the heading of "non-nuclear aggression against the Russian Federation"? Will Russia stop with Ukraine and risk going up against NATO?

At this point I'm thinking Putin is using his younger, less experienced fighters as cannon fodder. Using them to see what kind of resistance Ukraine can put up. In an old movie, Zulu Dawn, the Zulu chief sent his fighters against a British force at a fort. The Zulu's, hundreds of them, only had spears yet they charged into withering gunfire. When they retreated the British cheered thinking they had scored a victory. One of the scouts in the fort said see the chief up on the hill. The attack was so he could count your rifles. Later the real attack began.

It's always easy to imagine devilish cleverness on the part of one's adversary. Most of what I read indicates the Russians have just messed up. But like the Zulu chief, they have greater power in reserve. Their plan to take Ukraine without heavy destruction of the cities having been foiled, they will go with plan B.

First sign of this will be armored thrusts to encircle and isolate major city targets.

And so it is being done. From Wash Post:

If going for Kyiv, Putin has significantly upped the stakes. NATO air power would be a significant force multiplier. Germany would be seen fighting for right, not Empire expansion.

The rubble was trading at 119 to one US dollar in early trading. The Russians have doubled the interest rate. That's got to sting.
