The Walmart model going belly-up?

Walmart's entire business model is crumbling says one Ashley Lutz.

"The retailer has raised its pay to a minimum of $9 an hour because it discovered it was cheaper to offer higher wages than to train new workers who left for better opportunities."

Really? You don't say? Next thing I know they'll realize that part of the reason businesses exist is to create jobs people can actually live off of. Fancy THAT concept!

It just thoroughly amazes me that our largest corporations are run by such people. Does their greed really blind them this much?

Yeah it looks like the options for both workers and buyers increased sufficiently to put the model under strain.

Squeezing the workers always improves the results this quarter, compared to alternatives. And many want to squeeze the goddamn workers, and will rationalize it even if it costs on a slightly longer horizon....

Buying meat & produce from a store without seeing it makes me a little uncomfortable.

In some form - grocery sales account for 55% of Walmart revenue in the U.S., but less than 10% worldwide. Their supercenters are still good revenue generators, but they are currently opening more smaller "neighborhhod" units in central urban areas as opposed to the outskirts.

They have to increase online sales of durable goods, as Amazon and others are stealing market share.

We don't buy anything edible from Walmart - we purchase household cleaning items, toothpaste, etc. there, as Walmart is much closer to us than Costco.

25% of all the Groceries sold in the US come from Walmart.

My God that's depressing.
