Being forthrightly fervorous is no virtue.
I of course would never claim that enlightenment values well all-pervasive in the west, erasing all the old time religion and stuff. And particularly in wartime, or when dealing with non-white others, big exceptions were made.

You miss the thrust of my argument. Enlightment did not prevent......such and such and such

What is more telling is the length of time after the official age that its projection did not apply to non whites.
