The antebellum states' right was the right of a slave owner not to be restricted as to where in this country (the key word being territory) he could take his property. It was indeed all about the individual's right to own a fellow American, the sovereign state issue was a smokescreen. Given this, the North went to war to preserve our great and beloved country, not to free their fellow Americans.

Some Spartanburg County lawmakers support removing the Confederate battle flag from the Statehouse grounds, but state Sen. Lee Bright, R-Spartanburg, characterized the movement to remove it and other Confederate monuments as a “Stalinist Purge.”

Compare the Confederate Flag to the Cross!

People throughout history have misused symbols, and the Confederate battle flag is not an exception, Bright said. Just because a symbol may be abused doesn't mean it should be banned, he said.

Bright said for example he believed that the Ku Klux Klan has abused the symbol of the cross, but there hasn't been a movement to ban all crosses as a result.

Bright said he also believes that outside agitators and the media have latched onto the flag issue creating strife.
