Having to put a loved one into a long term facility is very expensive. If the person has assets and the funds then as long as the money holds out Medicaid is not needed.
But the vast majority of the elderly will need to go onto Medicaid once the house is gone. Without Medicaid then where would the money come from? The family would either take over the care or be faced with the possibility of Grandmaw being put out in the street so will need to pony up.

I have a family member who is 87 and receives 3500 a month in retirement/SS but still needed to go on Medicaid to make up the shortfall. (3K a Month) This is of course after the home, life insurance and other assets were spent down.

Oh so you can pay for long term care of the elderly? How do think Americans pay for it?
The blue chip jobs like my dad had with a nice pension have gone away, and I do not think companies pay for elderly health care insurance...I think Medicare and Medicaid does....if I am wrong someone let me know.

If Ryan voucherizes Medicare and your mom and day run out of money to pay the insurance company you are naturally going to want to pay for it....which would kill (financially) most families I think.
That is why I hate this voucher bullshit it will really destroy the middle class. It is not just about people over 65. Ryan knows this but he expects us not to be smart enough to figure it out.

The places I have had dealings with are by no standards high end facilities. The price is what it is here. The state privatized all of their care facilities when Mitch got in almost eight years ago.

Medicare/Medicaid is going broke. If something isn't done it will be gone.

If left up to the Randian freaks who decry every such program as "so(c)ialism", it will be gone anyways.

Not exactly true.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...-11e2-91e7-296

The solution is simple, make the people who sit around their pool, sitting on their ass', waiting for the dividend check to arrive, pay Medicare tax on every dollar they earn from capital gains income. Right now the pay $0 in Medicare taxes. There are bills passed that will tax unearned income starting in 2014.

If I have to pay Medicare taxes so does Rmoney.

If you do a little research the Obama Justice Department has eliminated billions in Medicare/Medicaid fraud. Cleaning up the system will also help.

This is exactly what Ryan is counting on....fears of national debt as an excuse to destroy important social welfare programs.

Funny how our neighbours to the north can afford universal heathcare and Old Age Pensions for all yet we, allegedly the richest country in the world with the best system extant, can't quite seem to manage it. Are we just stupid or what?
