Well, it would be intereting to see some real numbers. But there is a much more simple experiment you can do. Look at your pay stub. I get a very small return each year, so my contribution is a ball park of what I pay. Here are my numbers.
Federal Income Tax - 11%
Social Security - 5%
Medicare - 1%
State - 3%
So it looks like my total tax burden is somewhere in the neighborhood of 20%. Slightly less, I guess, since I do get some return. I'm not one of the "high wage earners" Democrats would like to tax more, but I'm doing pretty well on the whole. I suspect people who make less than me will come up with a lower number.
Now, there's a lot more that comes out of my check. 401k, Meical, Dental, Life and Disability insurance. So I'm not taking home 80% of my income. Shoot, my 401k contribution is as big as my Federal tax. And my medical insurance is as much as my State tax. But those are all in my control.
