Not a spectacular Hollywood blockbuster movie but it's probably better off for it, being such a disgusting slice of our history. Well acted imo. As soon as I saw Pitt I figured he'd be the good guy. 7/10

Finally threw an eye at 12 Years a Slave. Thought it an excellent film and appreciated that the Hollywood fluff and softening of the subject matter was largely missing. No "Chicken George" dancing around, grinning and slap happy.

The director, Steve McQueen, is a black man from Great Britain. That probably makes him immune to a lot of the Hollywood gloss and romanticization of subject that Hollywood is prone to.

I just finished watching it.
It was pretty intense and IMO I think it was over dramatized.
I just don't believe there was that much violence against slaves on a regular basis as depicted in the movie.
That being said, I also believe that racism today is far more prevalent than many people would care to admit, and that the silly myth that I keep hearing from the right, ie. that white on black racism is a thing of the past and that it is whites that are now the victims of discrimination is absolutely ludicrous.

When I saw him I thought to myself "that dude looks a little like Brad Pitt, I wonder who he is"?

There was never any prosecution of a lynching in the South until the middle of the 20th century. The first Federal anti-lynching law was passed in 1948.
I am sure there was much violence against slaves.

Agreed. The essence of the whole slavery thing was one group dominating and subjugating another. Cruelty is how that's done. Such a task brings out the latent sadism in ordinary people, instantly.
Don't take my word for it. Watch this: http://www.netflix.com/WiMovie/Natio...trkid=13462100
Pay attention to the segments on the Stanford prison experiment. It shows ordinary college students morphing into sadistic prison guards, in no time at all. Even the guy conducting the experiment got sucked into it.
One can only conclude that people are sadistic because it's comes natural to us.

I wonder if they screened it at CPAC?
Too much squirming for them, I suppose.

Whenever I see or read things like this movie I recall the wise Lincolns' phrase. It was a national sin. Or as Private Trip would say, 'Ain't no one clean.' I believe we're still paying for it.
