Not sure what to think on this one

So my wife tells me this morning that someone at our local kids high school has some sort of text message jammer. She is pretty peeved about it. Honestly does not bother me that much since I am so tired of kids watching their phones more then the teachers.

Anyways they went to the school and the school denies having any part in this. Now all the students think its a teacher who has this "jammer". A bit of poking around and these things are illegal. That aside what do you do ?

My wife is not one to text the kids often. Usually only things like where and when to pick them up and even then she is sending these messages on their lunch or after school.

Lets here what you think..

Kids in school are under the custodianship of the staff, there are requirements for instruction and hopefully implied trust from the parents. If texting distracts from classroom instruction, then I suppose the instructor has the right to manage his class to fulfill his task within reasonable excersize of authority.

The problem comes when the legitimate measures a teacher employs to maintain discipline physically extend beyond the classroom and infringe the rights of others. Grumpy's implied example is a case in point. If Mrs. Grumpy can't text the little Grumpies to tell them she'll be late or to text Grumpy to ask him to pick up the kids, that's a problem.

I don't really see a way in which text jammers in private hands can be made compatible with individual rights. I don't think it's a 1st Amendment issue but it does curtail an avenue of expression and communication.

Well if like Dave said, jamers might be illegal that would negate anything a teacher feels is right.

The things that have been happening in schools these day's safety and open airways would be the best thing.

He said that, as far as he can tell, they're legal.

Maybe re-read the post.

@Dave is the problem school wide or just in a classroom?

Personally I don't see the need for any student to have a phone in school but i'll tell ya what the schools have almost made it a requirement in some of their classes. I did not buy any of my kids a phone until last year. They almost had to have it to look up things on the fly in their classroom. Even so I still think there should be no need for any student to have them. Then again im a crusty old SOB.

If this "teacher" who the kids suspect does indeed have a "jammer" I would think he/she may be putting their job in jeopardy..

Smart phones are at once a marvelous technical device and the bane of human civilization.

I agree on your point that they shouldn't have them. We didn't have them in the '70s and we turned out just fine...........

Right?

Well, okay, maybe not "just fine", but we did alright, didn't we?

I think texts are stored at the server until deliverable, they'd appear after class if the jamming was only during classtime.
