I wouldn't put it past him to secure the black boxes with help from the separatists, deny that he has them, and then use the fact that the black boxes are missing to cast doubt as to the findings of any international investigation.

Hear how he's saying regardless of who pulled the trigger, it's Ukraine's fault for causing the instability in the first place?
I agree with you, I'm guessing he already knows what happened and based on that statement it was his guys. Yes it's just a guess by me with no proof.
I heard on the radio this AM that NATO had that area under heavy surveillance. I suspect that 'truth will out'.
Russia has proven they have no regard for international stability, something we all have a very large stake in.

I guess it's all relative considering the cavalcade of ruthless thugs they've had in charge since 1922. Personally, I'd take Gorby or even Boris Yeltsin over Vlad the Impaler.
Side note - The Soviet Union recovered the black boxes from the Korean Airliner they shot down in 1983 and hid his this fact until the Soviet Union collapsed 8 years later, denying their responsibility the entire time (in spite of ample evidence to the contrary).
If they think they can get away with it (or even if they don't, but think their citizens will buy into their denials), they'll do the same thing this time.

We might make mistakes but overall we basically enforce global stability.
Finn, Russia loves hard, violent leaders historically. Ivan the Terrible was weak, Peter the Great was vicious. I suspect that even if the Russians where told the separatists or Russian troops shot down the airliner Putin wouldn't loose much support.

They did it before (Korean Airlines shoot-down) where they hid the fact that they had the black boxes for 8 years while denying their responsibility (in the face of ample contrary evidence).
