Union workers and environmentalists have always had a rocky relationship.

Indeed. You can't take two dates to the prom.

Kentucky just signed a twenty year contract with India for coal. Increasing production for the mines.

But in green terms it is bad because of the transportation and lack of regulations in India.

In the meantime the Indian Prime Minister is in trouble for handing out favours to some buddies to rip off coal mine deals.

We are very good at exporting pollution to the less fortunate. It's being 'green' and is apparently good for our sense of self righteous smugness.

Funny how hardworking blue collar folks are thrown under the bus when they ignore their marching orders!

Where is my violin! It was natural gas that did it. that and dumping mountain tops into the rivers and streams. If the mining companies spent half as much time figuring out ways to burn coal cleanly as they do whining it might be different.

The real question - is fracking better, or worse?

I know a few working guys that own property downstate here, mostly for hunting. One got $250k signing plus 10% royalty. I'd guess he makes about $17/hr.

Probably even moreso as thanks to the Haliburton loophole they don't have to tell ous what they pump down into the well to cause the fracture. Then of course the water they used has to be dispose of safely and no doubt will make its way into the groundwater, They run a lot of commercials saying they encase the well in steel and cement - probably just as successfully as Haliburton did on the BP well in the gulf.

As much fun as it has been pissing off righties I am going back to printing enlargments of Florence and me for the albums.

Yes, Rob, I think fracking is probably far worse but the means of determining that are severely hampered by sweetheart legislation for Cheney's old friends and associates.

Then, of course, there's the astonishing phenomenon of the rash of earthquakes in areas where they're previously almost unknown but where fracking is proceeding apace. It's certainly possible and maybe even probable that fracking is the cause.
