Her brother survived the drowning of the "Wilhelm Gustloff" on 1/30/1945, torpedoed by the Soviets. Most of the 5600 refugees aboard did not.

By the end of her life, she learns that the "Hitlers" still get a chance from time to time. This makes her angry. And sad.
