A first lady (or gentleman?) should be like Caesars' wife (or husband?) imo. I think being classy is important.

I've never considered them targets. They're at their best when they are cheering for 'good apolitical' things, again, imo. With the exception of standing by their spouse of course.

But when they get involved in political infighting they become legitimate targets - this is their choice.

In my lifetime it really doesn't fit too well I guess. If squeezed I guess Mrs Bush Jr fits that the best, but by history I've read/things I've been exposed to maybe Mrs Carter or perhaps Mrs Johnson, though I really don't know enough and may be stereotyping or flat out uninformed.
