If he does it, then this reason alone makes it worth it that he was voted in. Getting the troops out if there lessen any foolish notions to invade Iran too.

You kidding Pete? You think Obama can come out now and say "just kidding!" He has too much political ambition to commit suicide like that.

I notice that the phrase 'combat troops' is still out there. We still well might see a contingent of troops for training and support.
And there's the exception for troops guarding the embassy, and it is one honking big embassy. I think it's our biggest. Wonder why....

The Post says 150 troops to remain for embassy duty. Newly built embassies in dangerous places have very big footprints. The whole idea is to keep the outer perimeter far from the building itself to reduce blast in the case of a bomb.

If the United States feels compelled to maintain a presence in the Middle East, I would have preferred to stay in Iraq as it was pretty much pacified instead of moving into Afghanistan. We lost our leverage in Iraq and NOBODY wins in Afghanistan.
This is based on the premise that we NEED to maintain a presence in the Middle East, a lot of really smart people say we do.
But I'm not so smart. We've already asked too much from our troops, the politicians have allowed this situation to denigrate into another Vietnam, so I'm of the opinion that it's time to take our ball and go home.
From both Iraq and Afghanistan.
I'm an isolationist at heart. Hell, I'm from Bugtussell and I like it here...that pretty much says it all.
Besides, we still have a bunch of nukes, and that aint' the only card we got up our sleeve. I could buy a few hands with that much easy.

I said from day one it was going to be another Nam.. The politicians didn't allow it to get there, they failed to look at history before going there.
They didn't seem to remember Russia getting their asses kicked all over the place there, and they didn't remember what fighting a faceless enemy was like in Nam..
And now we know the rest of the story... as someone famous used to say...

Yup, the Like every other power that went in, we relearned that it is very easy to take Afghanistan, and nigh into impossible to hold it. Again, Bush should have known that from all the history he read....

A HUNDRED AND FIFTY! A HUNDRED AND FIFTY! Why, it's practically WWIII! For crying out loud, how can he call that leaving??!!??!! What a lie! Good God, that has to be one of the largest installations of US troops on the globe! He thinks he can pull out tens of thousands of troops and call that pulling out when he knows damn well that there are 150 troops still there!

Sorry Pete but I listened to his address and the phrase "combat troops" was never used. There will be summat like 150 or 160 advisers there and something inder 200 marines to defend the embassy, pretty much the same deal as we have in several countries. Heck there are even marines stationed at the embassy in Ottawa.
