Stolen Valor: imposter "heros"
I just watched a piece on this phenomenon. Since 2010, it said, when the legislation against this sort of travesty was overturned as it "violated freedom of speech", incidents are on the rise. It seems to me, from the report, that most people that practice this sort of thing are in it for personal gain of some kind or another. This fraudulent behavior is repugnant. I wonder if the communities were these people live cannot take action to ostracize them. Coming from a military family (one who has sacrificed considerably over the years), knowing tons and tons of REAL veterans, this sort of behavior just really ticks me off!

No legal impediment to non-governmental action to expose and shun such individuals (subject, of course, to particular caveats - damn lawyers, ya know).

Well as one Harvard man said to the other "We should ostracize Jones"
Second Harvard man says "OK, I'll hold him, you do it."

Jesse Ventura said he was a SEAL, but he couldn't talk about it.
More like he DOESN'T want to talk about it.

There was a story here in Colorado about a guy who played it up for years. Made a huge deal about it. None of it was true. He got found out and it all blew up on him. It was hard to find anyone with any sympathy for him.

Thank God we still have attorneys and fat people to denigrate. I'll never forget my 400 pound friend arguing that Denny's booth seating discriminated against him because he couldn't fit.

I don't know...
While I find keyboard commandos and the armchair airborne to be particularly distasteful, I am not certain I find them any more repugnant than those who volunteer for service then wear their metaphorical war wounds (like being away from their families and/or deployments) as elitist crowns...
1. Don't pretend that "sandbox time" has protected me from anything.
2. No, I don't feel like buying you a beer or honoring you unduly for carrying out your obligation.
3. You did, after all, volunteer for such based upon your own reasons, right?
4. That should be enough to keep you warm at night.
Seriously, what is more socially irritating? A guy pretending to be a veteran because he wants some props or a guy feeling entitled to props because he volunteered? If you ONLY volunteered for the props then your motive is more than a little suspect...
But hey, this is from the perspective of a guy who has spent an adult lifetime trying to get an entire race of people to think beyond entitlements...

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion.

Now I'm more kindly towards our veterans than you, but I do see your point.
I have the highest respect for what they've done, but I lose that respect for the one's who use their service like a trump card in whatever discussion they may be engaged it.
Had a buddy like that. When I first met him, his story was he was drafted (beats hell out of doing time I guess), went to Vietnam, hated the Army, burned his uniform whenever he got home, etc.
After awhile, whenever being a veteran became fashionable, and he wound up with 100% disability for cancer (Agent Orange) that he didn't have...he became another Audie Murphy.
Couldn't have a conversation with him without hearing about how he "went to Vietnam", like that gave him a pass for any opinion he may have or for everything he had done, or not done, with his life.
After I listened to that shit for several years, I finally told him, "The smartest thing you ever did was get caught fencing them stolen batteries."
And it was the 100% disability that finally killed him. The VA gave him a footlocker full of narcotics every month, and supplied him with more than enough money to have the likker store make deliveries of 10 cases of Budweiser and cheap vodkey on a regular basis.
BTW, I can appreciate your difficulty in convincing your race that their is another way.
