Stephen Hawking Warning About Artificial Intelligence

This is something interesting to think about. His opinion on artificial intelligence is eerily similar to what one feels in their bones to be true.

Legendary astrophysicist, author and cosmologist Stephen Hawking has written an article that warns about the dangers of artificial intelligence,(AI). He looks at the way technology is moving forward, and what predictions have been made about the future. The article was part of a paper that Hawking co-wrote with fellow science professors Stuart Russell a computer-science professor at Berkley University and physics professors Frank Wilczek and Max Tegmark of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Stephen Hawking was inspired to write the piece after watching Transcendence, starring Johnny Depp and Morgan Freeman. The film, which is in cinemas at the moment, looks at two opposing possible futures for humanity. One is the road in which AI is a strong and crucial part of our existence and taking over many aspects of human life. The other is an anti-technology perspective. However, Hawking warns about dismissing this sort of artificial intelligence simply as science fiction.

Three others to name a few:

2001: A Space Odyssey
Colossus: The Forbin Poject
The Matrix

The concept of AI makes us uncomfortable due to how poorly we have met our creator's expectations.

Uh, how do you know we have a creator, let alone that we have failed to meet it's expectations?

I worry about AI, because of the fact that I do have certain knowledge of it's creator, and I expect short-sighted, self-interested motives. I have, in other words, a fair familiarity with what people want.

AI minds will want what they are made to want. Given the power, they will get it. We should be very very careful about what we tell them to want.

Despite the first law of robotics I have worked with computers for too long to feel comfortable with AI.

As I sort-of said, I've worked with people too long to feel comfortable with AI.

Even with the positronic brain's three laws, AI needs to be developed/implemented with caution.

Indeed because humans move slowly they do less damage when they screw up. A computerized robot on the other when a stray pulse flips a bit somewhere can wreak havoc in seconds.

I just finished watching "The Machine". It was really intense. It is not a very long movie but a good one.

I'd add "The Forbiden Planet".

As to creaters expectations how can we know what he/she/it expects. Maybe we're all part of a video game to get wiped out when the player gets bored.
