Vlad knows that Western Ukraine is ungovernable from a Russian point of view.

Western Ukraine is steeped in Banderism. For many years after WW11 the Soviets lost a lot of people trying to control Western Ukraine.

Russians view the area with dread and would rather Poland deal with the Banderites.

You seem to be under the impression that Putin would stop with "eastern" Ukraine.

The Ukrainians have sprouted wings without an airforce. The Rus are pissing down their hindlegs. (grin)

That's like saying Trump does not want to be #47, he is running to raise money to pay his legal bills.

Wish I could sell you some prime land in the Everglades, but you already live there. (grin)

If Russia goes deep into Ukraine the Poles would enter the fray wholeheartedly. Russia does not want to tangle full time with the Poles. The Poles are a top notch outfit with serious American connections.

To me the basic aim of the Russians is to lock off Eastern Ukraine and importantly to destroy the Ukrainian armies so in the future Ukraine would be timid undertake conventional warfare.
They have succeeded in this pursuit to a great extent largely because of the effectiveness of the Surovikin Line.

The Line held the Ukrainians and gave the Russians just that bit of time for building a huge army and putting the economy on a war footing.

The Russians have destroyed several Ukrainian armies so far to the point where Ukraine's biggest problem now is manpower not equipment.
The Ukrainian people know that, the other Europeans sense that, General Zalushny knows that and said so and he was replaced by a General whom the Ukrainian troops referred to as the "Butcher".

Putin believes his hand is stronger. Wants back territory lost with the dismantling of the USSR, plus new along the way. Feeling secure with his nuke threats and a wavering West.

Look at what he has been able to get away with so far. He strikes me as one who only respect a superior force. Not what he is experiencing now.

Well if he wants back territory lost with the dismantling of USSR, then by now based on the performance of the Russian military in Ukraine, it must be obvious to all and sundry, that is totally not feasible.

The totality of Russian threat is often used by certain elements to game the system.
