What really pissed off the locals in Iran is when the peanut farmer gave the Shah clearance to enter the US for medical treatment. Following the Iranian revolution, relations with Iran were actually starting to move in a positive direction over the course of early to mid 1979 - stable, if not reciprocally beneficial. Then, when Carter announced the Shah would be welcome in the US, that's when all hell broke loose in Tehran.

In one sense, it has. It certainly put a crimp in Iran's ability to export its own brand of theocracy. However, that was never going to last forever, and hasn't worked at all in the last 10 years.

I did notice, however, that it didn't take long after the agreement was reached for Iran to start poking the West in the eye. Looks like they've learned quite a bit from their friends in North Korea.

Well, not exactly!

Interestingly, the Shah had the 5th most powerful military in the world. All US weapons, including the only foreign sale of the of the F-14 Tomcat. I'm sure all those foreign military sales had nothing to do with why he was supported so enthusiastically.

yes the money went back to the military industrial complex...and where ever those jets were assembled billions of dollars were pumped into our economy...more swimming pools mortgages and corvettes.


And North America including Canada was made safe.
