Holy Shit, the government ceded control of something?

There goes the theory that government control only expands..............

I'm trying to see the big deal here. IIRC the internet was originally designed in the cold war era for a US military communications vehicle that was more secure than radio and telephone. When it became a public vehicle we decided to create the ICANN to take care of domain naming and addressing. The military really has no hand in running it anymore. The internet has grown to a global communications vehicle. It has also grown so big that the US doesn't want the sole responsibility for babysitting it. I can understand that. I think the problem here is the extreme right feels that if it is put under global control, that will lead to global rule making, and other countries might be able to censor it, or stop the US constitutional rights to free speech on it. Personally, I think it is too big for that. OTOH, it could just be the CEO of ICANN is Fadi Chehadé, and he was born in Beirut, Lebanon. Maybe he is secretly behind all this and wants to get the internet under the control of terrorists. Yeah, that's it.

Can you say "Edward Snowden", hired by a private contractor to work on top secret surveillance programs?

Can you say "Blackwater" or "CACI", hired by the government to perform certain functions of the military in a combat zone?

Can you say "Halliburton"? "KBR"?

Privatization's where it's at, Dave! We gotta make gummint run like a bidniss!

Here's a question for those who think government should run like a business, John;

When a business decides someone has become a burden, they claim they must rid themselves of such people. However, those people survive and go on.

What historically happens when governments decide certain people within their borders are a burden?

There are potentially tragic aspects to running a country like a business.

I believe Mussolini had a name for it.

We can't let our government get in the habit of ridding themselves of people they find burdensome.
