Republican Scientists a Distinct Minority

Recent studies show that of scientists surveyed, only 6% self-identify as Republican, whereas 55% self-identify as Democrat. This comports pretty well with my experience. I work with a lot of PhD scientists of all stripes, and I don't know a single one who is Republican. OTOH, none are wild-eyed liberals either. They're mostly just disgusted with the non-scientific bent of the GOP as well as their proclivity toward manipulative messaging/propaganda.

To the Republicans out there, do you have any discomfort knowing that the scientific community eschews your party?

Why would you ever bother with the intellectual curiosity it takes to pursue scientific endeavors when you think you already know everything? Why would you want to be identified as an "intellectual" when you belong to a party whose favorite passtime is to ridicule and demonize intellectuals?

I tend to question the intentions of a party that berates the highly educated and places candidates before us who try to appear "folksy" and average. The statement, "I'm just like you.", will cost you my vote. First of all, I don't believe you. You can put on the act all you want, but you're a politician.........THAT makes you "Not like me." right off the bat.

Secondly, I don't want you to be "Just like me.". I'm a schmoe. I want you to impress me with your intelligence and vision. I want you to be eloquent, dignified and "Presidential". I don't want you to be like my next door neighbor either. My next door neighbor is a crackhead, ferfuksake.

I had a self described "Rightwinger" tell me once, "Everything I need to know is in the Bible. If it isn't there, I don't need to know it."

I told him that was one of the saddest things I'd ever heard in my life.

I've mentioned before that the lack of critical thinking is what allows people like Beck and Palin to have any following at all (except for perverse comic relief). Obviously, those who hope to make a career in the sciences will not survive without developing the ability to use critical thought. The consistent use of critical thought leads to a rejection of the Republican agenda. Thus the professionals least likely to be Republicans are the scientists.

D-Ray

From here, it smacks of eliteism. Conform! Or be cast out. Like universities.

When well-educated people are rejected by the GOP as not fit to govern, because they are elitists, and when the findings of scientists are rejected because of political pandering, is it not surprising that such people would not be interested in the GOP?

All I know is, you want to get to say the moon on faith and theories, good luck, you wanna get there in one piece, talk to some hardbitten plaintalking engineer somewhere who deals with concrete things. Party has nothing to do with that...

I read the actual article at Slate. It's pretty good. I'd like to see though, what kind of scientists were polled.
