I think, in the end, we're stuck going with the gut on values. I know of no scientific way to compare the worth of one elite painting to a million carved wood clocks. Fully concur with these sentiments.

I don't think Plato had guys like the Medici or Harry Lime (Orson) in mind as guardians of the republic. I wonder if Aristotle recognized this possibility.
