Having a great export market did not hurt. Unfortunately that export market - southern Europe - is now broke.

The Germans are regimented, readily obey authority, and believe that German culture is superior. Since becoming a united people they have been Europe's strongest nation. Makes sense that their economy is the strongest in Europe.

German history since Bismark is just too complex to condense into a few observations tho the contrast of the present to the first part of the 20th Century thru it's midpoint is remarkable.
