So were DKW and SAAB. Dunno how bad the Trabi motors were, you'd think the same country that produced the Praktika and Exakta cameras, and Zeiss Jena lenses could manage a precision zweitakt engine, but of course they did previously and very well indeed.

And the SAABs were 3-cylinder engines. Pretty unusual though not, I think, unique.
What about the DAF? They were air-cooled 2-cylinders with a weird belt-driven infinitely variable transmission but I don't remember whether they were 2 or 4 stroke.

Simple 2-stroke motors were common in motorcycles, motorscooters, and smaller cars for decades before air pollution legislation made most of them impermissible. These crankcase-aspirated type were simpler than 4 strokers without the valve gear and recirculating oil pumps, therefore cheaper to make, but burned the lube along with the fuel, leaving carbon deposits in the motor and smokey noxious effluent in their wake.
A modern closed crankcase forced induction 2 stroke with charging pump and valving can run cleanly with recirculated lube, but are employed for efficiency rather than simplicity and usually of diesel type. The largest engines as used in Freighters and tanker ships are of this type as are many smaller stationary engines.

Citroen's small people's car was a well engineered opposed twin 4 stroke on a revolutionary frame and suspension concept. Much more there than one might think.

Le Deux Cheveaux, a.k.a. the 2CV, for 2 (taxable) horsepower.
