In the first major transition for the band, between these two great albums Peter Green leaves and Fleetwood Mac is a blues band no more. They're so different you wouldn't know both are Fleetwood Mac. I love pulling out my old LP of Then Play On for some youngster who only knows the Buckingham Nicks band. Drop the cart on "Rattlesnake Shake", and after a minute or so Ike says, "Its Fleetwood Mac."

The kid says, "Get out!"

Agreed Ike, and here I am blessed with three copies of Rumours album that I cannot bear to listen anymore. I do like Peter Green's 'In the Skies' a lot.

I like Then Play On but I think Bare Trees and the later Buckingham Nicks albums are much better than the Peter Green era. Too much white English blues for me and if you are going to just do straight Elmore James you might as well listen to Elmore James.

Don't get me wrong...I love later Fleetwood Mac. I played a hole in my first Bare Trees LP. Lindsey Buckingham is one of the great talents in the business.

But the 60's British blues? Fleetwood Mac, Savoy Brown, Cream, John Mayall, Alexis Korner, Long John Baldry...I still love it. And...they woke me up to Muddy, BB (and Freddie and Albert), John Lee Hooker, etc., etc. Americans were idiots, listening to Bobby Rydell and Fabian...it was the Brits that brought us around.

I like John Mayall I have seen him in concert. I just think that the Green era is just a bit overblown.

I just gave that album to a Peter Green fan who bought a turntable from me. He's an engineer from India.

Just picked up a compilation of Dylan covers by blues artists called "Tangled up in Blues." It came out in '99, I think. Among the artists appearing are Taj Mahal, Mavis Staples, R.L. Burnside, Guitar Junior, John Hammond, Leon Russell, and the Band. Some really good performances.

Regards,

D-Ray
