I wouldn't care if they had targeted conservative groups. In fact, that would make me like them even more.

The IRS has apologized for targeting - doesn't that admit they did it?

It was said that more progressive groups were checked than conservative gtoups. The hassle seems to be that the anti gvmt anti tax groups were examined at all.

".....
The Internal Revenue Service on Friday apologized for targeting groups with “tea party” or “patriot” in their names, confirming long-standing accusations by some conservatives that their applications for tax-exempt status were being improperly delayed and scrutinized.

Lois G. Lerner, the IRS official who oversees tax-exempt groups, said the “absolutely inappropriate” actions by “front-line people” were not driven by partisan motives.

........

During that period, about 75 groups were selected for extra inquiry — including burdensome questionnaires and, in some cases, improper requests for the names of their donors — simply because of the words in their names, she said in a conference call with reporters.

.........

The sensitivity arises in no small part because of the IRS’s history as an agency that presidents have used to intimidate, harass and punish their political enemies. Most infamous was Richard M. Nixon, but the practice went back at least as far as Franklin D. Roosevelt. ****Post-Watergate reforms made the IRS more independent and were designed to insulate it from politics.

........."

The Obama administration and congressional Democrats have been misleading the public when claiming the IRS targeted liberal groups.

A report by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
http://oversight.house.gov/wp-conten...w-appendix.pdf

An internal IRS analysis conducted for Lois Lerner in July 2012 found that 75 percent were conservative.

10 applications TOTAL are liberal/progressive leaning groups based solely on the name.

I'm with you.

When you have a group of people that define taxes as "theft" it certainly makes sense to scrutinize their tax returns more than someone who considers them the price you pay to live in a civilized society.
