An unbiased perspective can appreciate the constraints and rails within this small country operates. The need for affordable energy being prominent. One suspects that the main reasons for the unusual noise about Hungary coming from the EU especially are:
Orban refusal to follow Merkel after the Syrian upheaval.
His desire to accept affordable energy from any source.
His opposition to the transfer of huge EU funds to entities outside the EU.
What you see depends on where you stand and you have long stood with Team Putin (and by extension Orban).

If one was in a deep sleep for long time and awoke after the result of the Hungarian elections was announced one would probably respond by asking if another Ceausescu was overthrown.

Orban can best be described as avuncular. However after years of internet and main stream demonization a perfunctory person could get the impression that Orban was operating a gulag. Lets look deeper and investigate a certain charge: Orban skewed the electoral system in favor of rural folks. Well, well... a number of democratic countries do that. As a matter of fact the early framing of the United States of America includes that; "The Great Compromise" eventually skewed the system in favor of the fly over states.

Red face

After sixteen years in power did Orban create and unleash a police state on the Hungarian population? A salient charge an unbiased viewer could conclude is Nepotism. Hmmm but nepotism is a mark feature of several modern well heeled democratic entities. Nothing egregious. BTW note Orban early concession to handing over power. It was promp; a high water mark in a successful democracy.

The successful demonization of Orban over the years has been one of the greatest propaganda feat in modern times.
Lets go to its genesis.
When the large influx (mainly male) from conflict zones appeared on Hungary's border Orban erected physical barriers. For that he was roundly condemned by the EU which was pushing quotas.

Pushing propaganda from Pravda doesn't work around here, comrade.

The emphasis on 'combat age' males is pure xenophobia talking. You think these storied refugee males are going to organize into combat units and stage a coup?

At the time the input was largely unfiltered but there were indications that many were from Afghanistan and Syria. Hungary's reaction was reasonable.

You and I have rather different ideas of what is reasonable. 'Reasonable' seems to suggest 'according to reason,' but most decisions are made before reason gets involved much. 'That's reasonable' is therefore usually a value judgement, and so is an opinion that can seldom be fruitfully argued.
