Rust Belt On The Rhine

Germany:
Rust Belt On The Rhine.

Although published about 18 months ago the below article is still valid as the main issues remain real.

https://www.politico.eu/article/rust...on-of-germany/

BERLIN — Germany’s biggest companies are ditching the fatherland.

Chemical giant BASF has been a pillar of German business for more than 150 years, underpinning the country’s industrial rise with a steady stream of innovation that helped make “Made in Germany” the envy of the world.

But its latest moonshot — a $10 billion investment in a state-of-the-art complex the company claims will be the gold standard for sustainable production — isn’t going up in Germany. Instead, it’s being erected 9,000 kilometers away in China.

Germany's economy shrank for the second consecutive year in 2024

https://apnews.com/article/germany-e...77354b5bfdc904

The year’s weak performance underlines Germany’s status as Europe’s worst performing major economy and shows the country as having no meaningful growth in the past four years as it has struggled to deal with major shifts in the global economy.

Germany doesn't seem to fully grasp the need for innovation in the new information economy. Heavy industry has been moving to China and lower cost places for decades, but countries like the USA realize that, in the new information economy, free-wheeling innovation and entrepreneurship is essential. Free-wheeling creativity and innovation isn't really a German thing.
